How to Measure
How to take basic staircase measurements (initial guidance)
*The following measurements are intended as initial guidance only.
**They can help us understand your space and provide an early indication or rough estimate, but they are not a substitute for professional measurement.
1. Measure the floor-to-floor height
Measure the vertical distance from the top of the finished floor below to the top of the finished floor above.
If floor finishes are not yet installed, make sure to allow for their final thickness.
Floor finishes such as timber, tiles, or carpet will affect the final stair geometry and must be allowed for.
This is the most critical measurement, as it determines the number of steps and the rise of each tread.
2. Measure the stair opening
Measure the length and width of the stair opening at floor level.
This defines the maximum space available for the staircase and affects its shape and layout.
If the opening is unfinished, note whether it will change once structural works are completed.
3. Check the available run and start position
Identify where the staircase will start and the direction it will travel.
Measure the available horizontal space (run) within the room or hallway.
This helps determine whether a straight flight, quarter turn, half turn, or space-saving solution may be suitable.
4. Note headroom and obstructions
Check for any sloping ceilings, beams, or roof structures above the proposed stair position.
Adequate headroom must be maintained throughout the staircase in accordance with building regulations.
5. Existing staircase measurements (if replacing)
If you are replacing an existing staircase, note:
-
total width,
-
number of steps,
-
approximate pitch,
-
and handrail or balustrade positions.
While these measurements can help us provide early guidance or a rough estimate, a staircase is a fully bespoke structural element.
For this reason, we strongly recommend professional site measurement. We design, manufacture, and install staircases as one coordinated process, taking full responsibility for accuracy, compliance, and long-term performance.
If you are planning a made-to-measure staircase or a staircase renovation, our team will carry out full professional measurement and ensure the staircase meets all relevant building regulations.
